Soybean

Soybean

Containing 12 times more protein than milk, soybeans are primarily grown for animal feed, delivering an efficient source of protein. They are also processed into soybean oil and biodiesel.

Global soybean consumption is predicted to grow over the next decade, largely due to the increase in livestock production linked to rising meat consumption, particularly in developing countries, while demand for vegetable oil derived from soybeans is also expected to rise.

We source soybeans primarily from South America, as well as the US and South Africa. We crush and process soybean, soy meal, soy oil and biodiesel, including at our plants in Rondonópolis, Brazil, and Standerton, South Africa, selling them to global markets.

Sustainable soy sourcing

Our Sustainable Soy Sourcing Policy sets clear criteria for pre-financed soy in Brazil, while satellite mapping helps us to screen farms for compliance. We continuously identify environmental and social ‘hotspots’ in our entire soy footprint, to further establish supplier expectations and prioritise our supply base monitoring and risk mitigation efforts.

We also collaborate across our industry, through initiatives such as the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Soft Commodities Forum (SCF) and through our commitment to the Agricultural Sector Roadmap to 1.5°C. See our SCF reports here.

See Our certifications for information on how we leverage certification to promote sustainable sourcing.

Finally, we provide channels for stakeholders to lodge grievances related to soy supply chain sustainability. For further details, refer to our Integrity Hotline.
